Introducing the Melange Artists
Hi! I’m Laly Mille. I’m a mixed media artist living in the beautiful Loire Valley of France. I believe that art connects us to the deepest, most beautiful parts of ourselves, and that beauty and creativity have the power to change the world in amazing ways. Through my online classes, I’m on a mission to guide and inspire like-minded creatives from all over the world to shine their light and grow their own artist wings. I’m on a journey of wonder and discovery, and I’m delighted to share it with you!
Work alongside Laly as she creates textures in variations of white. She focuses on value, contrast, layers, and her mixed media collection. Take a look at her favorite sources of inspiration for white and neutral tones in warm and cool hues.
In Part Two, you'll work on building a foundation of white values and creating your mixed media piece. Watch Laly experiment with different papers and ideas as she goes.
Part three of Laly's coursework examines her process of building more layers with a focus on value, composition, and contrast.
Part Four is all about creating an abstract landscape using the contrast you have built in your previous layers. Laly uses her favorite materials for adding subtle detail and to establish her focal point. Work with Laly as she finds the horizon in her layers of white and builds her beautiful landscape scene

Two in One:
In this final portion of Alex' work, see how she combines all her ideas into one fabulous finished piece of art. Work alongside her as you incorporate your own themes and ideas into your mixed media art.
“Hi, I'm Alex Mathias, a self taught mixed-media artist creating colorful abstracts and tiny house artworks in sunny Lafayette, CA. I am originally from Germany, and since marrying my American husband 21 years ago, we moved over 15 times with our little family of four! Yep, that's right. We've moved house fifteen times! Throughout all our "wandering" years as expats, painting has always been my happy place. No matter where we've lived, give me a brush and some paints, and I'm happy as a clam :-) If you've ever browsed my
Instagram feed, you will see that I love bright and cheerful colors. I love to keep my daily painting practice fresh and exciting (it's my favorite way to spend some "me time"), and even though I work spontaneously and without much pre-planning, there's a theme that keeps reappearing in my work—the tiny house.
The tiny house has become one of my signature marks and appears in almost all of my artworks.
Sometimes it's a focal point; sometimes, it's a small accessory in a larger composition. Even in my purely abstract paintings, I use tiny house marks to activate the canvas before getting started. Sticking with this personal theme gives me confidence and the freedom to explore all the beautiful artistic styles. I can play with exciting color schemes, new art supplies, and learn new painting techniques while (automatically) creating a collection of related paintings. It's been truly
transformative for my creative journey.
This month, I'd love to see you create a series of artworks based on a theme that's dear to your heart. Have a good time experimenting with your supplies, try out new painting techniques, and explore your playful spirit. Most importantly, have fun! I can't wait to connect with you. ”
As a mixed media artist working with monoprints, collage, fabric, thread and photography, I am interested in the push-pull of constantly searching for something... Are we developing something new or are we constantly referencing and influenced by the past?
How do we know when the search should end, and does it?
I draw inspiration from my surrounds - both natural and urban.
I find patterns, textures, imperfections. The forgotten, the weathered, the discarded appeal to me.
My current practice is to explore my surroundings, the sense
of place. I like to ‘zoom in’ on an environment and work with that. That could mean photographing found objects, ‘foraged’ natural elements and litter - arranging it to be seen in a different way.
I enjoy abstracting the essence of a place to create something new. So the viewer can also experience something they may have previously overlooked, with fresh eyes.
As society is drawn to the shiny and new, I find joy and contentment in what already has been. Currently I am exploring found objects, patterns and textures and how it reflects the sense of place and creates a connection to it.
Meet Tara and go on a nature walk with her in her native Australia. Work along with her as she uses her gel plate to make mono prints using pieces she has collected from her walk, and see how she sources and uses inspiration. See how she cuts her prints, uses them for texture, and creates photo collages from her finds.
See Tara experiment and play with her gel plate using all sorts of natural materials for inspiration and guidance. Watch her use fibers, layers, stamping, painting, and all sorts of mark-making directly on the plate to create beautiful monoprints.

“As an artist, instructor and woman of faith, my mission is to serve others and help them get the most out of their art as a hobby, or as a business. My own desire to learn and unquenchable curiosity keeps my fingers messy and my heart happy.

“I love vivid color and the way paint takes on its own life if you let it boss you around a bit. You’ll often see colors in my art reflective of Miami’s Art Deco style and tropical environment, and I have a soft spot for line, texture, and mark making. Many of my paintings are full of movement and feel reminiscent of the ocean. I work in watercolor, acrylic, mixed, and sometimes digital mediums. The practice of art keeps me grounded and happy (as do bits of chocolate, coffee, and wine ) and I try to squeeze in a few minutes every day if I can manage.
Late in 2018 I began painting in an old book I picked up at a thrift shop - a project I’d had brewing in the back of my mind for quite some time. When I posted a quick video on Instagram reviewing the work I’d done in it and asked if anyone might be interested in joining me for a group project, the response was overwhelmingly positive. About a week later, The Old Book Revival was born. We are now a community of nearly six thousand artists (of every skill level!) and we share and post work daily. The project is designed specifically for low-pressure creative freedom. Nothing has to be perfect; the point is to be making art on a regular basis and creating a colorful story out of something unremarkable. It is quite literally the alchemy of trash to treasure, purely because of the journey it illustrates.

“I am a mixed-media artist, painter, storyteller, and teacher with a fervent curiosity for all things soulful, creative, and mysterious. I make art every day, teach like my heart’s on fire, and travel as much as I possibly can. My workshops, retreats, and classes are dedicated to helping artists identify and understand their visual language, create art that makes their cells sizzle, and embody their artist soul with gusto. When I’m not in the studio, I love hiking, kayaking, and biking in my beautiful state of Arizona with my husband Hansel, our son Phoenix, and our sweet pup Rocket.”
Watch as Erin McCormick creates a landscape collage using printed paper and canvas board. Explore the uses of Erin's favorite materials as she creates texture and shapes using cut-outs.
“Growing up in a small town in southern Ontario, Canada, I had a love of colour. I tended to collect colourful markers, oil pastels and coloured pencils even though I didn’t use them often. With my father’s influence, I found a love of science and in adulthood I became a forensic scientist.
After experiencing a time of personal loss and sadness I knew I really needed something for myself, something I could concentrate on that would push me to feel human again. It was at this time that my husband suggested painting. I laughed at the thought of wet paint splattered all around the house, but one day I came home from work and he had transformed our spare bedroom into a little art studio. All I had to do was start painting.
Acrylic is my favourite medium but I also love paper collage and pastels. I find myself drawn to landscapes and abstract work. I'm still learning so much every day - about techniques, colour palettes and using different mediums. I’m always searching for that “thing” that defines my unique style, but that’s something I’ll likely chase for years and years. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the journey and I’m totally ok with my artist's life being a work-in-progress! ”
